Nakhane at Marcus Garvey Park
Tickets: FREE. Show at 7 pm.
The singer named Nakhane was born into a religious family in a strictly conservative community in South Africa. It was not a welcoming place for a queer young black man, so Nakhane moved to London. There, he began making technicolor pop music influenced by David Bowie, Queen, and 80s new wave bands. In interviews, he has also professed admiration for musicians including Anohni, Busi Mhlongo, Mbongwana Star, and Nina Simone. He cuts a dramatic figure on stage, but more to the point, he has a remarkable voice, including a stunning falsetto. The South African singer Nakhane performs on Wednesday night, Aug. 14, in a free concert at Marcus Garvey Park.
