The free music keeps coming this weekend in New York. On July 29, Summerstage at Central Park presents the desert rock of Mdou Moctar, a Tuareg guitarist from Niger whose music uses traditional rhythms married to incisive guitar playing, and first became known through West Africa’s cell phone trading network before bursting onto the larger so-called “world music” scene. Tuareg singer and guitarist Mdou Moctar headlines July 29’s free concert at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. Folk guitarist Meg Baird and electric harp wiz Mary Lattimore share the bill.
